I’ve finally taken the plunge and experimented with ChatGPT 4 for image creation in interior design, and I must say, the experience has left me both amazed and utterly captivated.

Over the last 48 hours, with little exception except for the times ChatGPT 4 decided to block me (ruthlessly so, as we are currently only allowed 40 messages per 3 hours), I have dedicated myself to writing, generating, refining, and sometimes scrapping countless attempts to craft the perfect prompts. These prompts were meant to generate images that align closely with my vision.

Although ChatGPT 4 can generate a stunning image from a simple prompt, such as “Create an image of a lovely living room in the Nordic style with a sunlit window. Render in vibrant colours,” (example below) crafting a specific interior design concept board for a particular theme required a bit more effort on my part.

Image Created With a Simple Prompt

Yet, this effort was minimal compared to the time-consuming process I previously followed to find inspiring interiors, either online or in magazines. To be frank, those references were hardly satisfactory, as they rarely captured my vision and taste accurately.

I approached this task as a creative process that begins with a clear and concise brief. I’ve discovered that the outputs from ChatGPT 4 are only as good as the prompts we provide. Utilising natural language to create images is incredibly convenient, yet the quality of the output heavily relies on the use of descriptive, precise vocabulary. It’s important to avoid verbosity, which the AI tool does not appreciate (who does!). So, prompts should be succinct, yet detailed, employing a careful selection of descriptive adjectives to help ChatGPT 4 generate an image that closely matches the intended vision.

My last post on the transformation of Paris inspired this exercise. I chose the theme ‘A mix of French and Nordic interior design styles for an apartment overlooking Paris,’ drawing upon the various shades of pink found in peonies for my colour scheme. I intentionally included specific pieces of furniture, such as a Louis XVI-style medallion chair and an elegant Louis XVI-style 2-seater sofa upholstered in dark pink velvet fabric, to infuse my concept with a historical essence.

After approximately 4-5 hours of trial and error, I managed to guide ChatGPT into creating all the visuals for this concept board, and I am genuinely pleased with the results.

Driven by my newfound obsession (I warned you; I’m hooked), ChatGPT 4 also created a series of images inspired by the Japanese anime style, capturing elements of what I love most about the French countryside. This project was an absolute joy!

I realise that I have just begun to explore the vast potential of AI tools. It’s incredible to see how these tools enable us to bring our visions, ideas, and inspirations to life through visual arts. Despite the varied perspectives on AI’s impact on humanity, I remain optimistic that, in our current times, it will lead to positive transformations in our lives
